“Sick Kid at night? Confused About a Mole? Tap Telehealth: Your Front Door to Better Healthcare!”
I want to talk about something that I see time and time again in the ER – patients who just don’t know where to start when a health issue arises. We’ve all been there: your child gets sick in the middle of the night, and you’re not sure if it’s just a bug or something more. You see a new mole or a rash that looks a little concerning, and you wonder if you need to see a doctor, but you’re not sure if it’s something you need to be seen for right away.
And let’s face it, most of us aren’t trained medical professionals so how are we supposed to know what is serious and what is not? You are not alone, you are not crazy, and many people feel the same! And if you do want medical attention right away, the only option many people know is the Emergency Room.
The Problem with Over-Reliance on the ER
As an ER physician for 20 years, I’ve seen it all. I’ve treated true, life-threatening emergencies, like heart attacks, strokes, and car accidents. And I’ve also seen countless people come in with non-emergency conditions that could easily have been treated elsewhere, if only there was an easy and convenient place to turn to. I’ve seen people take an ambulance to the ER for a common cold because they didn’t have insurance or transportation to be seen anywhere else. Our modern ERs are packed with non-emergency conditions, simply because the healthcare system hasn’t given patients an easy button, and a lot of that is because people just don’t know where else to start.
I remember a young mom who came to the ER late one night with her 2-year-old, who had a fever. She was understandably terrified, and when I asked her why she brought her child to the ER she said “I just didn’t know what else to do! It was late at night, my primary care doctor is closed, and I had no idea if this was something I needed to worry about!”. And you know what, that is a real feeling! I also remember a gentleman who came in with a rash that he had had for 2 months. It was so frustrating for him because he was sure he did not need to be in the ER, and even though I was able to help him, it was not the best place for his care. Both of those patients needed a guide, a quick convenient way to figure out where they needed to go, and that is where Tap Telehealth can help!
